NORMAN'S CAY

Cocaine Trading Island

What a history this island has. Much of it was bought up by Carlos Lehder, the Colombian cocaine smuggler, as a transhipment port to the nose-candy loving Americans, back in the 80's. Carlos is in the pen now, and Normans' Cay is pretty well back to Normal: nice beaches, vibrant local community, and isolation. Hi Carlos, wherever you are, if you can get on line in the hoosegow.

Using a small plane and a professional pilot, Carlos and his henchmen began to fly cocaine into the United States via the Bahamas, increasing their financial resources and building connections and trust with Colombian suppliers while spreading money around among Bahamian government officials for political and judicial protection. Their unconventional method of drug-smuggling began to gain credibility. Prime Minister Pindling of the Bahamas was said to have earned a small fortune in this manner, although he was never formally prosecuted. But, Lord, don't be scared off by this islands past history. Like the other Bahamas islands, it has great beaches, has hotels, bars, and other things to do, but cannot find them, due to the attention paid to wacky Carlos.
