LONG ISLAND ATTRACTIONS Cape Santa Maria Bay and Beach![]() This is unquestionably one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with pure-white, powdery sand, stretching about three miles. Cape Santa Maria is at the island's northern tip, about 15 minutes from Stella Maris, and was named by Christopher Columbus for one of his ships. The beach is in a protected bay that faces northwest. It is mostly calm and, even with strong inland winds, it is still swimmable and enjoyable. Towards its western end, there are three snorkel areas right off the beach: a mild shallow sea garden; shallow rock/low coral formations around the final western rock-point; and "Rainbow Reef," a very pretty shore rock and coral reef, ideal for snorkelers in fair weather. There are also outer reefs and coral heads. A beach reserve and cabana provides shelter from the sun. Complimentary transportation to the beach is provided for guests staying at Stella Maris Resort . Love Beach![]() A beautiful large, perfect 'nature swimming pool', completely protected except in severe weather - great for children of all ages. Pretty 'miniature' snorkeling. Continuing South: Plus 6 more beaches, average length each 1/3 - 1/2 mile - mostly open, with some partially protected coves, some occasional outer rocks, all allowing bathing, swimming and snorkeling off the beach in calm weather. Pink coarse sand. All great for beachcombing! Usually completely secluded. Millerton's School Beach![]() This beach is located on the West Coast (leeside) about 10 minutes from Stella Maris. It has a secluded bay, lots of small shells, yellow/white soft sand and is about 1 mile long. A small island, just 200 yards off shore, has shallow water and is perfect for snorkeling - great for children of all ages. Dean's Blue Hole![]() Dean's Hole is situated in a marvelous setting: About one hour south from Stella Maris, north of pretty harbour village Clarence Town, it sits right at the Atlantic's edge, well protected by high cliffs, enjoying inland bordering by a gorgeous beach and bay. While swimmers and snorkelers can readily enjoy the uniqueness of this site, above and underwater, for a diver, putting on a tank and going in is a must ... this type of Blue Hole is diving for mystique, diving for depth (caution - naturally we advocate limiting this to safe depths!). It's diving for 'feeling' ... for intensity of awareness: Of sound, of stillness, of the look down, the look up. Yes - you will see some small reeflife along the upper edge ... and you may encounter an occasional turtle, or perhaps a small school of tarpon. Yes - we have seen Porpoise here ... but only by chance. The real thrill is this: You will have been in the World's deepest known Blue Hole - and the World's second largest, waterfilled, cavern body! And the World's eighth largest cave body of any type! Dean's Blue Hole lies just offshore. For more info, go HERE Columbus Monument![]() High cliffs drop sharply to the north coast of Long Island, and to the inner bay and feature the Columbus Landing Monument and breathtaking views all around. A small beach below, inside the bay, offers superb snorkeling along the outer north shore in all but rough weather. Inner shallows are pretty and great for exploring. Enjoy body-drift tides! Great for children. Catholic Parish Church in Clarence Town![]() Historical church architecture is the focus of the sightseeing, especially the Catholic Parish Church in Clarence Town, another of Monsignor Hawes works. Monsignor Hawes also did work in Cat Island, and had the unusual distinction of being both a priest and architect. He was know as "The Hermit of Cat Island". He was also known as "Father Jerome". But his architectural talents were soon sought and he spent much time designing churches and supervising building on Cat Island, Long Island, and in Nassau where a convent, a boys' college, and the Benedictine Monastery of St Augustine brought him fame. Worn out through hard work and a severe regimen, he died in St Francis Hospital, Miami, Florida, United States of America, on 26 June 1956. He was buried in the cave he had prepared for himself below his hermitage on the hilltop of Cat Island. ![]() Monsignor Hawes Long Island Regatta![]() May 25 - May 28 2007. The Long Island Regatta, with its majestic sailing sloops, has been held at Salt Pond every year in May or June since 1967. Many people flock to the island from throughout the country and around the world to view creations by the renowned Knowles boat builders at Mangrove Bush, who produce the majority of racing sloops in The Bahamas. The popular song "Long Island Breeze," composed and sung by Bahamian architect and entertainer Pat Rahming with words by Long Island born scoolteacher Jerome Cartwright, epitomizes the very essence of Long Island. The song can be heard on nearly every radio on the island during Regatta time. Concepcion Cay![]() At Conception Island, divers can investigate over 30 shipwrecks and tours are arranged from the Stella Maris Resort Club at the north end of the island. .and the deepest blue hole around, at 600 feet into the ocean floor, For more info, go HERE Max's Conch Bar and Grill![]() This open air restaurant is located on the main road in Deadman's Cay. Max's Conch Grill and Bar is simply fabulous, a must visit for both the quality of the food and the atmosphere. It's a fun place, drawing as many, if not more, locals as tourists. Open from 9am to 9pm every day of the week, staying open later is there's a good flow and vibe in the bar. The conch salad is exceptional, as are the conch burgers, and the conch dumplings tasty. Daily specials include baked ham or steamed pork. On site, there's general store and a miniature golf course that is free to play. It is very casual and reservations are not needed. And remember, this is the land of that tasty drink, the Long Island Iced Tea. Dunmore PlantationIt takes determination and the help of a resident of the area to reach the ruins of the old Dunmore estate. This former slave plantation house, built of limestone with two fireplaces and chimneys, is located in Dunmore's, a very small settlement in the south. There are still drawings of sailboats used during the plantation era on the walls. About half-a-mile from the site, there are two pillars, apparently the remaining gate-posts to the plantation. Situated on a hill, overlooking the sea on three sides, there remain six gate posts (four outer and two inner) and a house with two fireplaces and drawings of ships on the wall. It was part of the estate of Lord Dunmore, for whom Dunmore Town on Harbour Island was named. Adderly's Plantation Ruins![]() Originally a cotton plantation, occupying all that land known as Stella Maris. The ruins consist of a group of three buildings, practically intact up to roof level. Gray's Plantation RuinsThere are ruins of at least three houses, one with two chimneys. One ruin is very large and the third seems to have had a cellar and one story.LONG ISLAND CAVES![]() Go HERE to see the majors caves in a rather extensive collection "Wild Tamarind Ceramics Shop"![]() At Wild Tamarind (tel. 242/337-0262) -- 1km (2/3 mile) east of Queen's Highway at the hamlet of Petty's -- Denis Knight makes the best ceramics on the island. You might want to carry off one of his ceramic sculptures, or at least a bowl or vase.
"Long Island Prison" This painting was done by artist, Aurence. The prison is a well-photographed, well painted building. The Forest Dance Club, Long Island Just south of Clarence Town, The Forest has dancing and partying to live bands playing rock, Calypso, and reggae music every other weekend.
